Who makes Upfell

Upfell is made by three friends who walk the Lake District fells. We aren't a company or a registered business. It's just the three of us.

Why it exists

The 214 Wainwrights are the fells Alfred Wainwright described in his seven Pictorial Guides, and most people take ten years or more to walk them all. We wanted one place to keep that round: which fells are done, which are left, and who else is out there doing it.

So Upfell records a fell when you stand on it. Get within 75 m of the summit and the capture screen opens. It runs off your phone's GPS, so it works with no signal, and your summits sync when you're back in range. Fells you walked before you had the app can go in by hand. They count towards your 214 but don't earn Altitude Points. You can share your round with friends, and with teams and leagues.

How we put the fell pages together

Every fell on this site has its height, grid reference, area, a route from the nearest car park and a walk write-up. The write-ups draw on Wikipedia and on published walk descriptions, and we checked them against those published routes. Each page lists its sources at the bottom, with the date it was last updated. Figures about who has finished the Wainwrights, and where, come from the completion registers kept by the Wainwright Society and the LDWA.

We haven't walked every route for this site. The routes follow paths mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, and some car parks were picked automatically and still need checking by hand. Those pages say so. If you find a mistake, email us and we'll fix it.

Upfell isn't a navigation or safety device. Carry a map and compass, and check the mountain forecast before you go.

What's free

Everything for walkers is free, and it will stay free. There's no subscription and there are no ads. Capture, the offline map, patches, friends, teams and leaderboards all come at no cost. Upfell comes to iPhone first, and Android will follow.

Where businesses come in

Local cafés, pubs and shops will be able to sponsor walking challenges. A business picks the fells, and walkers who finish the challenge unlock a reward, such as a free coffee. They show the voucher on their phone at the counter. Getting a business on the Upfell map is free, and sponsored challenges are how we pay for the app. This part is coming soon.
