Brock Crags

The top of Brock Crags is a rough, near circular patch of high ground about half a mile across, dotted with rocky knolls. It has two main tops, and a small tarn lies between the two highest knolls. You get a good view all round, and just to the north, in the hollow between Brock Crags and Angletarn Pikes, lies the ragged outline of Angle Tarn.

Hartsop, at the foot of the fell, is the place to start. The car park is at the end of the public road through the village, and there is a donations box at the gate. A short, simple ascent goes straight up from here, though there is no path on the upper part. The Walk Lakes round is longer and more varied, at about 12 km. It heads up towards Hayeswater and crosses Hayeswater Gill by a footbridge. Then it traverses a boggy fellside and goes through a gap in the wall at Satura Crag, above Bannerdale, before turning up to the summit cairn. From there it continues to Angletarn Pikes, drops to Boredale Hause, and returns to Hartsop beside Angletarn Beck. Walk Lakes warns of cattle that can be aggressive in the fields near Hayeswater in summer.

From Patterdale, the main path to High Street passes just below the summit, so Brock Crags is an easy detour on the way to or from Angle Tarn.

Hayeswater, under the south side of the fell, was a reservoir until its dam was removed in 2014. Prison Crag stands halfway down that slope above Hayeswater Gill. To the east a narrow ridge with steep sides runs out to Rest Dodd, the obvious next top if you want to keep going.
