Wether Hill

Wether Hill is a long walk over grass and peat to a broad, rounded top on the main north to south ridge of the Far Eastern Fells, between Loadpot Hill and High Raise. The old Roman road over High Street runs along this ridge and passes close to both of Wether Hill's tops without crossing either. Ullswater and Martindale lie to the west, Haweswater to the east.

From the west, park on Martindale Hause by St Peter's Church. Spaces are limited, so think about taking the Ullswater steamer to Howtown instead. From the Hause you can climb over Steel Knotts and Gowk Hill, or go up Fusedale, to reach the Roman road, then follow it south. The Fusedale round, which also takes in Loadpot Hill, Arthur's Pike and Bonscale Pike, is about 14 km with 730 m of climbing. From the east you can start at Burnbanks near the Haweswater dam and climb beside Measand Beck, or park at Moorahill Farm near Bampton and follow the long east ridge over Low Kop and High Kop.

There is no scrambling or exposure. The ground is the hard part: rough grass, moss and peat, boggy in places, with lots of faint paths. You'll need a map and compass in mist.

There are two tops of almost the same height. The northern one has the cairn and is the one people usually count. The view is wide rather than dramatic, with the Helvellyn range to the west and a long view east to the Pennines.

On the saddle between Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill are the remains of Lowther House, a shooting lodge that belonged to the Lowther estate. Little is left beyond the chimney, and walkers have made a rough shelter in the ruin.
