Kentmere Pike

The top of Kentmere Pike is a grassy dome at 730 m, with the ridge wall running straight over it. An Ordnance Survey pillar stands on the east side of the wall and a small cairn on the west, both at the same height. The view reaches Windermere and Morecambe Bay, and takes in a good part of the Lakeland fells.

The Kentmere side is rough ground, with signs of old quarrying from Hallow Bank Quarter to Ullstone Gill. On the Longsleddale side a rim of crag runs above the narrow upper River Sprint, made up of Goat Scar, Raven Crag and Brown Crags. Goat Scar, to the south east, has a cairn and is the place to look down into the craggy head of Longsleddale.

From Kentmere, an old grooved path climbs from the top of High Lane and meets the ridge wall south of the summit. Parking by Kentmere village hall is very limited, with space for under half a dozen cars and an honesty box, and the bus no longer runs. On the Kentmere Horseshoe, Kentmere Pike comes late in the day after Harter Fell, and the walk finishes over Shipman Knotts.

From Sadgill at the head of Longsleddale, follow the walled track towards Gatescarth Pass. Leave it just north of Steel Pike, the rocky outcrop you see from the valley path, and follow the line of an old fence up to the ridge.

Coming from Harter Fell, the ridge drops to a wet dip and then climbs the grassy slope beside a wall and later a broken fence. None of it is steep.
