Froswick

On the ridge between Kentmere and Troutbeck, Froswick is the middle top of three, with Ill Bell to the south and Thornthwaite Crag to the north. It has no obvious direct way up of its own, and most people cross it as part of the Ill Bell ridge or the Kentmere Horseshoe. The summit is grass with a small cairn. The bigger neighbours cut off some of the view, but you can see west to the Scafells and the Langdales.

The Kentmere Horseshoe starts from the village hall in Kentmere, about four miles north of Staveley. Parking there is very limited, with room for fewer than half a dozen cars and an honesty box. Farmers sometimes open a field for parking, but you can't rely on it, and the Kentmere Rambler bus no longer runs. The Walk Lakes route goes clockwise up the rough Garburn Pass to Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick and Thornthwaite Crag, then round by Mardale Ill Bell, Harter Fell, Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts. It measures about 20.7 km with 1,085 m of ascent. The ridge paths are mostly clear, but the ground is rough in places.

From Troutbeck, the High Street Roman road climbs the west flank of Froswick up the valley of Hagg Gill, a stretch known locally as Scot Rake. You can also go up the ravine of Blue Gill. On the Kentmere side, a tongue of grass on the north side of the fell avoids the worst of the scree.

The west slope is steep and smooth, broken only by Blue Gill. A spur runs south from Froswick into the Troutbeck valley and ends in Troutbeck Tongue, a separate small fell.
