Loadpot Hill

Loadpot Hill is the last real height at the northern end of the long High Street ridge. Beyond it the ground broadens and sinks towards Penrith, so this is where the Far Eastern Fells run out.

The Roman road called High Street is the natural line. From Pooley Bridge, or from Askham, climb onto the open moor of Moor Divock and follow the old road south along the north east ridge. The path is good and runs north to south along the whole ridge, now and then on the Roman line itself. Near the top the road bends west around the summit, so leave it for the last short pull to the trig point.

Howtown, on the east shore of Ullswater, is the other good start. You can reach it by car or on the Ullswater steamer from Pooley Bridge or Glenridding. From there you can go up Fusedale, or climb Arthur's Pike and Bonscale Pike first and walk along to Loadpot Hill. Bampton and Helton give a quieter approach up the east ridge, past the columnar cairn on The Pen.

The going is grass and moor all the way, with no crags on the usual lines. The west side drops steeply into Fusedale, so keep to the ridge in poor weather.

A trig point marks the summit. Close by is a pile of stones from the chimney of Lowther House, an old shooting lodge. The view west takes in Ullswater and a long spread of Lakeland fells, with the Pennines to the east.

Moor Divock, crossed on the way up from Pooley Bridge, is scattered with tumuli, standing stones, old boundary markers and stone circles, and there are sink holes and old quarries among them.
