Bleaberry Fell

Four kilometres south of Keswick, on the ridge between Borrowdale and Thirlmere, Bleaberry Fell has Walla Crag as its north western edge. Walla Crag counts as a separate fell because so many people climb it for the view, and most ascents of Bleaberry go over it first.

Start at the car park in Great Wood, on the Borrowdale road. Climb through the woods and up Cat Gill to Walla Crag, then follow the path about two kilometres south east over open moor to the top. You can also walk from Keswick, about seven miles there and back, or start from the car park at the bottom of the Watendlath road and climb over Brown Knotts from near Ashness Bridge. From the east, the hamlet of Dale Bottom on the Keswick to Ambleside road gives a way up.

The fell itself is mostly dry. Heather covers the upper slopes, and the only real effort is a short steep section below the summit. There is no scrambling. The wet ground starts if you carry on south, where old fence posts lead towards High Seat over some of the soggiest ground in the Lakes, with long detours round the pools.

Several cairns and a stone shelter sit on top. The view goes all the way round, with 87 Wainwrights in sight, Skiddaw about six miles to the north and Helvellyn over four miles to the south east. Walk to the north west cairn to look down on Derwentwater. To the south, the Scafells and Great Gable line the skyline.
