Calf Crag

Far Easedale lies on one side of Calf Crag and Greenburn on the other, at the head of the ridge that runs north west from Helm Crag and Gibson Knott. Grasmere is the base, with pay and display car parks in the village. The fell usually comes as part of the Greenburn Horseshoe over Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott and Helm Crag, about 14 km with 710 m of ascent.

Walked that way, you climb Steel Fell first and then cross a stretch of very boggy ground with indistinct paths to reach Calf Crag. From there the ridge back to Helm Crag stays above 350 m for about five kilometres, winding round small knolls and rock outcrops. The path is rocky and not always clear, but there is no real scrambling.

For a shorter day, go up Green Burn and take the grassy strip between Pike of Carrs and Rough Crag straight up to the ridge, or walk up Far Easedale and come onto the ridge behind the summit. At the head of Thirlmere, you can climb Wythburndale from the Steel End car park, though expect plenty of bog on the way.

The top is a rocky knoll with a cairn, and a small crag just to the south. Higher fells block the view west, but to the east you look down to Grasmere lake with the Helvellyn range behind.

Just south west of the summit, a bridleway crosses Greenup Edge between Borrowdale and Far Easedale. Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk follows it, so in summer you are likely to meet long distance walkers heading down into Grasmere.
