Sergeant Man

Strictly, Sergeant Man is a subsidiary top of High Raise, a third of a mile to its south east. But High Raise is a grassy dome, while Sergeant Man is a small rocky cone, and from Langdale and Easedale it is the top you actually see.

From Great Langdale, start at the New Dungeon Ghyll National Trust car park and climb beside Stickle Ghyll and its waterfalls to Stickle Tarn. From there, head north over the moor, or swing round onto the Blea Rigg ridge and follow it north west. Grasmere has several ways up: the long ridges over Blea Rigg, Tarn Crag or Calf Crag, or the path past Easedale Tarn and up by Belles Knott. From below, that knott looks like a sharp little peak, and from above it turns out to be an easy grassy walk. Codale Tarn lies on a shelf above it, near Codale Head. One good Grasmere round climbs beside Sourmilk Gill and over Tarn Crag.

The ridges and the moor around the summit are wet, with pools and boggy ground on every side, though the summit cone itself stays reasonably dry. The final climb is up a short ridge on the north side, rocky but without any scrambling.

High Raise blocks part of the view, but the rest goes all the way round. To the east the skyline runs from Fairfield and St Sunday Crag to Dollywaggon Pike, and the pointed top of Bowfell stands out to the west.

Easedale Tarn, Codale Tarn and Stickle Tarn all lie on its flanks, so a round from either valley can pass two or three of them.
