Watson's Dodd

Watson's Dodd is a Wainwright, one of the 214 Lake District fells in Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides. At 789 m (2,589 ft) it is the 41st highest of the 214 and the 13th highest in the Eastern Fells.

About Watson's Dodd

A rounded, grassy top linking neatly with the Dodds. Steady gradients and broad horizons make it a relaxed ridge day with Helvellyn close at hand.

Watson's Dodd rises only 11 metres above the saddle joining it to Stybarrow Dodd, and its top is a grassy triangle with a small cairn. No one has traced the Watson of the name. The nearest clue is a Watson's Park recorded in 1734.

Low on its western shoulder stands Castle Rock, a near vertical crag with more than 60 climbing routes. Walter Scott used it in his 1812 poem The Bridal of Triermain. Its North Crag has been treated as dangerous since 2011 because it is cracking.

From Legburthwaite, at the foot of St John's in the Vale, you can climb straight up the broad west shoulder between Mill Gill and Stanah Gill. There is no marked path, only steep grass. The easier way is the Sticks Pass bridleway from Stanah, over Stybarrow Dodd and then a short, easy walk across to Watson's Dodd. The ridge between the Dodds is grassy and rolling, easy going on a clear day.

A longer round from Legburthwaite goes on over Great Dodd and Clough Head, then comes down by White Pike and the Old Coach Road to St John's Beck. That is about 17 km with close to 1,000 metres of climbing. The Dodds can also be walked from Dockray or High Row on the Ullswater side.

The view reaches from Blencathra and Skiddaw round to the Coniston fells, across Thirlmere to the Central Fells, and on clear days to the Scottish hills.

In winter

The long west slope above Legburthwaite has no marked path, and further north the Dodds' western faces fall away in gullies and crag. In snow or cloud, go up by the Sticks Pass bridleway and follow the ridge rather than heading straight up the fellside.
