Glenridding Dodd

At 442 m, Glenridding Dodd is the knobbly end of a ridge that runs down from the Helvellyn range to Ullswater. It is only about a kilometre long, and the village sits at its foot.

From Glenridding, use the National Park pay and display car park or the Ullswater Steamers car park (NY 386 169). Walk up Greenside Lane, then take the steep path known as The Rake up to the wall on the col west of the summit. A loop comes back down beside Mossdale Beck through bracken and woodland, where windblown trees may mean ducking under a trunk before a step stile brings you to the road. The round is about 5 km with 330 m of climbing. The second start is the lay-by on the A592 north of Stybarrow Crag, beside Mossdale Beck. Both routes meet at that wall, and only a short climb remains.

The lower slopes are private, but above the wall the fell is open access. Oaks cover the south and east sides, larches climb almost to the top on the north, and Stybarrow Crag falls sheer to the lake road on the east.

The top is a short ridge of heather, rocky knolls and wet hollows, with a small cairn. The better viewpoint is a little east, where the ground drops steeply and nearly all of Ullswater is laid out below, with the Patterdale fells beyond Birkhouse Moor and Keldas. Look for a boundary stone cut with M and H, which marked the split between Marshall and Howard land.
