Wandope

Wandope does not stand out from below. From most angles it looks like a shoulder of Crag Hill, joined to it by the broad grassy plateau of Wandope Moss. Walk to its eastern edge, though, and you are on the rim of Addacomb Hole, a hanging valley shaped like half a crater, with a headwall about 210m high.

Buttermere is the natural start. From the village a path climbs to Whiteless Pike, drops to the col of Saddle Gate and follows Whiteless Edge, a narrow and airy ridge, up to the plateau. The flanks are steep and rough, but the path is clear and needs no hands. Two quieter routes go up Sail Beck. One climbs beside Third Gill onto a short eastern spur. The other carries on to Addacomb Beck and a fine ridge along the southern rim of Addacomb Hole. Wandope also fits into a Rannerdale round. Walk Lakes' circuit from the small car park below Rannerdale Knotts goes up Grasmoor by the Lad Hows ridge, over Crag Hill and back by Wandope and Whiteless Pike, 12.2km with 966m of ascent.

Heading from Wandope towards Whiteless Edge, the path runs a little south of west across grass above the head of Third Gill to a cairn at the top of the edge. Take a bearing if the cloud is down.

The small summit cairn is a few yards from the drop into Addacomb Hole. Grasmoor and Crag Hill block the north, but the view is wide in every other direction, and the Scafells stand out.

All the water that falls on Wandope ends up in Crummock Water, through Sail Beck, Rannerdale Beck and their feeders.
