Causey Pike

Causey Pike is the row of knobbles you can pick out from Keswick, and the direct way up is short and steep with a scramble at the end. Park on the road up to Newlands Hause. There is a large informal area above Uzzicar Farm at the end of the old mine track, and more space by the bridge over Stoneycroft Gill. No bus runs up this road. The Honister Rambler passes through Braithwaite, a little under two kilometres away, which is also the usual start for the full Coledale round.

The direct route goes up Rowling End from beside the Stoneycroft bridge. A narrow path climbs steeply through heather and over easy rock steps, with plenty of choice of line, then eases along to Sleet Hause before the final rise. That last section is a short scramble over pinkish rock steps and then polished rock to the top. It is not exposed, but you will use your hands and need to pick your line.

If you would rather not scramble, follow the old mine track west up Stoneycroft Gill towards Sail Pass. Then turn back east over Scar Crags and along the ridge, and you reach Causey Pike from behind.

There is no cairn or trig point. The summit is the first of five knobbles along a narrow crest, all of them almost the same height, and some walkers call the row Nessie's back. From the top you look across Derwentwater to Skiddaw and Blencathra, with the Helvellyn range beyond.

The track up Stoneycroft Gill was made for an old cobalt mine, and you pass what is left of the workings on the way.
