Outerside

Across the marshy dip of High Moss from Scar Crags, Outerside stands on its own north of the main Coledale ridge, a cone of heather. It gets far fewer walkers than Grisedale Pike or Causey Pike, and its narrow paths through the heather give it a lonely feel even on busy days.

From Braithwaite, go up the drive to Braithwaite Lodge and onto Barrow, drop to Barrow Door, go over Stile End and cross the boggy Low Moss to Outerside's north-east ridge. A more direct path from the village follows Barrow Gill south-west before turning west to the top. From Stair in Newlands, the old mine road up Stonycroft Gill crosses the fell's shoulder at about 460m, and a short climb north reaches the summit. There is a large informal parking area on the Newlands road above Uzzicar Farm, at the foot of that track. The fell also sits on the Coledale round, reached from Sail by the terrace path across the northern face of Scar Crags and a boggy crossing to the south-west ridge.

The paths are narrow and faint in places, through heather with a few small rocky steps. Expect wet feet on the mosses either side. There is no scrambling and nothing exposed.

The summit is a small pile of stones on a rocky top. The higher fells from Grisedale Pike round to Causey Pike close off the west. The Helvellyn range lies to the east and the Skiddaw group to the north-east, and you look straight down into Coledale to Force Crag Mine at its head.

Unlike the hills around it, Outerside was never mined.
