Harter Fell [Eskdale] is a Wainwright, one of the 214 Lake District fells in Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides. At 654 m (2,146 ft) it is the joint 111th highest of the 214 and the 20th highest in the Southern Fells.

About Harter Fell [Eskdale]

A shapely, conical fell between Eskdale and the Duddon valley, topped by three rocky tors and a trig pillar. Paths climb through forest or open fellside, with a short scramble onto the highest rock. Wide views of the Scafells, the Duddon estuary and the Irish Sea.

Harter Fell stands between Eskdale and the Duddon. From Eskdale it looks like a neat cone, and Wainwright thought it beautiful from that side. It is also one of the few Lakeland summits where you need a little rock scrambling to stand on the highest point.

On the Duddon side, walkers start at the Forestry car park and picnic site at Birks Bridge. Cross the river, walk through Great Wood to The Birks, then follow a forest road past Grassguards, gaining about 500 feet in a mile and a half. A path through younger plantation leads to a gate at the pass. Turn right along the forest fence and weave through outcrops on the south-west flank to the top, about 3 miles and 1,700 feet from the car park. From Eskdale, a direct path starts at Jubilee Bridge near the foot of Hardknott Pass. The top of Hardknott Pass and Fickle Steps in the Duddon are other starts.

Forest covers the lower slopes on the Duddon side. Higher up, grassy knolls give way to rocky outcrops, and Demming Crag makes a fine gable end on one side.

The summit is three rocky tors. The trig pillar is on the western one, but the middle tor is the highest, and you have to scramble a short way to get onto it. Every fell of the Eskdale horseshoe is in view, from Sca Fell round to Crinkle Crags. South, you see as far as the Duddon estuary and Morecambe Bay, and west across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man. Traces of Victorian copper mining remain near Spothow Gill in the north-west corner.

In winter

Reaching the true top means climbing a short rock tor, which is awkward when iced, so the trig pillar on the western outcrop is the safer place to stop. From Birks Bridge the forest road is a long approach, so allow time to be off the rocky top before dark.
