Glaramara

Look up Borrowdale and Glaramara fills the head of the valley. It stands midway along a six kilometre ridge between Stonethwaite and Esk Hause, and it has twin summits.

The National Trust car park at Seatoller is the handiest start. Walk the lane to Thorneythwaite Farm, where a field path heads towards Combe Gill and climbs the steep east side of Thornythwaite Fell onto the north ridge. The ridge then runs fairly level past the crags of Combe Head to the summit, about 3 miles with 2,310 feet of ascent. Two ridges flank Combe Gill, and the eastern one, over Rosthwaite Fell, Dovenest Top and Combe Door Top, is the better. A direct route from Seathwaite is so steep that few use it.

Near the summit, a 20 ft rock groove bars the direct way. It is not hard, but the holds are polished and slippery when wet, and a thin path avoids it. Otherwise it is rough ridge walking over knolls with short rocky steps.

A cairn and a wind shelter stand on top. Stop for the view down Borrowdale to Skiddaw, with Great Gable, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes close by. Combe Head, just north, is another good viewpoint, and for a longer day you can go south over Looking Steads to Allen Crags.

Combe Gill, on the north side, is a hanging valley left by a glacier. It holds the Dove Nest Caves, which Wainwright called the only natural cave in the Lake District, although rockfall has since partly blocked them.
