Grey Knotts

A kilometre south of the road over Honister Pass, Grey Knotts rises above the slate mine and the youth hostel. The name really belongs to the grey summit rocks, and Ordnance Survey maps call the wider high ground Seatoller Fell. It only just qualifies as a separate top, with barely 15 metres of drop between it and Brandreth.

Park at Honister. The mine has a walkers' car park and a paying visitors' car park, and the National Trust has one behind the youth hostel. The seasonal 77 Honister Rambler bus from Keswick stops at the mine. A well marked, mostly stony path from near the hostel climbs straight to the top. For an easier line, take the path up to the old tramway and the foundations of the Drum House, follow the Great Gable path for about 400 metres, then turn off left and climb a grassy gap through the crags. That way you never need to touch rock. From Borrowdale, the ridge also climbs from the woods behind Seatoller.

Paths are stony or grassy and some are faint, so this is a fell for a clear day or confident navigation.

Gillercombe Buttress

The fell's best rock faces Borrowdale. Raven Crag, known to climbers as Gillercombe Buttress, carries conventional routes, and the boulders that have fallen from it are popular for bouldering.

The top is dotted with grey tors, two of them equal in height, with small tarns and old fence posts between them. The Buttermere valley is well seen to the north west and the Scafells stand out to the south. Below the summit to the north you look over the Honister workings, where slate has been worked for centuries and still is today.
